Tremendous Tresco

"A plaque on the rock face, which was placed here by the Holdsworth Special Forces Trust, commemorates the work of men of the secret Naval flotillas which set off from Tresco Channel in 1942 and 1943 to liaise with the French Resistance.

"Two castles can be seen, Cromwell's Castle at sea level and King Charles's Castle on the hill above.  Cromwell's Castle was built in 1651-1652 to protect Tresco Channel and New Grimsby harbour from possible attack by the Dutch.  King Charles's Castle was built between 1550 and 1554, and during the Civil War an earthen rampart was constructed to protect the castle from attack across Castle Down, but this did not prevent the Parliamentarian forces from capturing it in April 1651."
